How to pick a photo that actually looks good on wood

Wood is not paper, and that changes everything

When you print onto reclaimed pine, the grain and the lighter knots show through the pale parts of your image. That is the whole appeal. It also means a photo with a bright, busy sky or a lot of fine detail can get lost. The trick is choosing a picture that works with the wood instead of against it.

Photos that print beautifully

• Strong, simple subjects. A face, a dog, two people on a beach. Anything where the main thing fills most of the frame.
• Warm tones. Golden hour shots, autumn colours and skin tones land especially well on pine.
• A bit of contrast. Darker areas hold their detail, so a photo with real shadows reads clearly.
• Good light to begin with. A clear phone photo taken near a window beats a grainy one shot in a dark restaurant.

Photos that fight the wood

• Heavy on pale sky or snow. Large white areas turn into "grain only," and your subject can disappear.
• Very fine detail across the whole frame. A crowd, a busy cityscape or tiny text won't survive the print and the seams.
• Already low resolution. A screenshot of a screenshot will look soft once we blow it up to wall size.

Go larger. A statement wall piece of the couple, sized to the space above a sofa or bed, becomes the thing guests comment on for years. One clear photo beats a collage here, every time.

New babies and new homes

People are short on wall space and long on clutter at these moments, so a smaller pallet picture or a set of block frames tends to get more love than something huge. Keepsake sets also travel well in the post.

Remembering someone

These are the orders we take the most care with. A single, well-lit photo on a modest board, finished plainly, says more than anything ornate. Tell us it is for this and we will treat it accordingly.

The colleague or hard-to-buy-for friend

A custom laptop cover or a set of coasters hits the sweet spot: personal enough to mean something, useful enough that it does not feel like clutter.

Three mistakes that ruin an otherwise good gift

• Leaving it too late. Handmade takes about a week, longer near the holidays. A rushed order is a worse gift.
• Cropping too tight before you send it. Send us the full photo. We can always crop down, but we cannot invent the edges back.
• Picking the photo you think you should give instead of the one that makes you smile. The second one is almost always the better gift.
